Gypsy has never managed to make sense of something she experienced in D-Wing about four years ago. One of the old exhibition cells, which is now our staff room, used to include an audio recording of a prisoner from the 1980s who described having to sew mail bags during his imprisonment. This recording was on a continuous loop, in a room where outside noise cannot be heard. One evening, after all the visitors had left and the castle had fallen silent, Gypsy was walking through D-Wing when, on passing this cell, she heard the unmistakable sound of a woman laughing from inside…
